Here is a retrofit option for Blaze Vest owners who want a sleeked-down profile for hunting in thicker forested areas.  Grouse pockets measure 9″ x 9″ square, and can be worn a bit further forward than our longer standard pockets.  The Grouse Belts can retro-fit into standard vests of similar sizes by simply replacing the existing belt.  Instead of the standard long pocket flaps, Grouse pockets have a a slanted fold-over flap that fastens with a one-handed snap configuration.  This seals out debris and water often picked up in open top pockets.  Pocket access isn’t as fast as the standard pockets, and they lay flatter and lack the overall capacity.  For the sleekest vest downsize for small profile, and easy on/off we recommend using these pockets without the water holsters, and replacing the Cam Buckle with the Side Release style buckle.
We have 2 sizes in stock, the M/L size measures 32″ end to end, while the XL measures 37″.  Belts are shipped with their own base harness straps attached, so no tools are required to switch these out with standard pockets.  If these pockets have less than 4″ between them in front, we recommend using the side release buckle over the cam buckle.

Blaze Cordura Grouse Belt and Pockets, M/L and XL  $55.00

Our new favorite accessory holster for reasons of price, construction, and color option.   It’s also easily removable from 2″ strap/belt locations. We’ve been using one in tan and one in green for a camera and phone, so each is easy to identify when needed.  The phone shown is the Casio G’zone, the camera a Canon Power Shot SD 1200 IS.   They are lower profile than the Mountainsmith pouches and are very tough and abrasion resistant.  Great for those who use IPhones for everything including navigation!  Available now in Coyote only.
The first image below shows one pouch mounted on a 2″ harness strap, and the lower adapted to the removable pistol holster base.

Coyote Cordura Tech Sheath  $10.00   Backordered

These lightweight universal holsters are built of nylon webbing and velcro, and after a couple of years of use we find most suitable for small frame, light weight semi-auto pistols like the small frame or “baby” Glock.  We sew a 2″ strip of fuzzy velcro on the chosen pocket flap location in a regular or crossdraw position, and re-inforce the connection with 2 HD brass snaps.

Choice of location is based on the hunter’s dominant hand for shooting, and is recommended on the opposite side pocket from the one most used for shotshells.  For example, as a right hand shooter who loads shells from the right side pocket, we use a crossdraw position on the left side pocket, to be drawn with the dominant right hand. Hunters with mixed dexterity and shooting styles will have to think this out.

We have use the holster as an occasional accessory in the off season when exercising dogs in areas we’d normally have a shotgun.  We pop off the holster from the pocket flap and store it with the pistol until needed.  Some trial customers choose to carry it as a backup to a small gauge or double gun in varmint country.   We’ve had no complaints from the ten customer trials we’ve run but the holster is not as secure as a belt mount, so in extreme conditions and heavy cover be aware of this.

On the 2 largest vest sizes there may be enough 2″ belt exposed to mount a Yaqui Slide or other low profile holster.  Paddle holsters we’ve tried have not been very comfortable but we are interested in hearing about other ideas that might work well on the vests.

These holsters are available only on the standard 5″ Wingworks Vest pockets, and this option can be added to new vest orders by purchasing here.

Wingworks’ Removable Vest Holster Option  $20.00

We’ve discontinued the Small Cyber Pouch in favor of the more compact new Tech Sheath also listed on this page, however the belt-mount Medium is still available for larger than usual point and shoot cameras and some small binoculars.

Currently the Medium is only available to mount vertically on a horizontal belt, but will be available for vertical strap mount once their current inventory is replaced.

Replacement Harness Straps

We hope this is the “final solution” to issues we’ve had with the base grommet cutting into the 1″ harness adjustment strap and occasionally failing.  The new grommet is heavier and rounded on the edges along the also heavier 1″ webbing.  The grommet/bolt connection is also covered on this unit by another layer of webbing to minimize scratches to gunmetal or wood.  The same bolt and nut are used with a smaller washer which is provided with each set of straps.  The added “D” ring on each side is a good place to attach a lanyard for items stored in the shell bags or stash pockets.

Dual Adjust Side Release Buckle

These are offered a la carte for those interested in changing to this style  from the cam style.  Particularly suitable for stable weather in early season when rapid adjustment of belt is not so necessary.   Another feature of this buckle is  there are no loose ends, so various soft cases and sheaths can be mounted on either side of the buckle and they won’t slide off when the buckle is opened.  There are no other strap holders or tri-glides needed with this application, just fold the strap ends back and under the shell pockets on both sides.
This buckle is also offered as an option on new vest purchases.

Tan Sternum Strap Harness: $25.00

This fall we have used HD Backpack webbing on the 1″ rear adjust straps, and also on the 2″ shoulder straps.  Also the Hypalon patches are now Coyote color to match the strap color.  In 3 sizes, M, L, and XL. From an earlier post describing this style of Harness:  ”In order to avoid a padded curved shoulder strap that might interfere with gunmounts, we used bombproof Hypalon material to create a curve to the strap.  The Sternum Strap keeps the upper 2″ straps inside of the gun mount zone, and the Hypalon junction redirects the 1″ straps back to the shell bags.  This style uses the tension of the vest load to create added structure to the vest on the body.  It also connects to the same base points as the standard, but it adjusts in front differently.  The 1″ straps below the Hypalon junctions adjust like most backpacks do on a 1″ tensionlock fitting.” For heavier hunters you may need to jump up a size, contact us if you need sizing advice.

Blaze Orange Sternum Strap Harness:  $30.00

These harnesses are the same as above but are layered with 3M Blaze Reflective Tape sewn into the webbing.  Great for hunters looking for some blaze on their upper body for heavy cover hunting.  Many khaki vest owners are trying these as an occasional add-on when some extra visibility is needed.   The 3M tape is not a vinyl type material so not as slick on the surface, though more slick than the webbing underneath.  We haven’t had any problems with gun mounts using butt pads, though hard butt plates may be a bit slippery.  We looked around and felt this was the most versatile and durable, though not the cheapest for the job.  In low light conditions the material will glow white rather than orange.

Note:  These shell holders will hopefully be available with smaller gauge screw-in inserts sometime in early 2011.  We’ll update this info as we hear more.  New inserts will be friction fit into the standard 12 ga holders, we are told.

Rivet Mount

WingWorks Vest Rivet Mount Shell HolderThis shotshell holder is from the tactical shotgun world and currently available only for 12 ga. shells.  For those of you who shoot a 12,  this holder has two flanges that take 1/8 pop rivets, usually with a washer on one side on soft goods like coats or vests.  On webbing and nylon fabrics an awl can be heated up with a torch to melt rivet-sized holes.  We like to put the washer on the outside to allow the smooth part of the rivet against the body.  Made of rugged molded plastic, it holds shells well enough that we have mounted these upside down without problems.   We’ve used these on the WingWorks Sternum Harness on the Hypalon patch left side for right handers, right side for lefties.  It’s an easy grab across the body for two shells aimed at the proper angle to easily release from the holder.

If you rivet these yourself, consider using 1/8″ diameter, 1/8″ to 3/8″ grip aluminum rivets with a washer.  The rivet rod will break before cracking the plastic tabs.

Belt Mount

WingWorks Vest Belt Mount Shell Holder

This shotshell holder is from the tactical shotgun world and currently available only for 12 ga. shells.  For those of you who shoot a 12, and hunt or shoot with a Wingworks Vest, this item is a useful replacement for the 2″ loop fitting that holds the loose end of the vest’s 2″ belt.  Made of rugged molded plastic it holds shells at an easy grab angle slanting away from the shooter.  We often use this as a handy spot for 2 loads of buckshot to protect the bird dogs, or a couple of stout pheasant loads when quail hunting.  The split back of the holder can be worked onto most 2″ belts without sliding everything else off first.  There is plenty of room for most belts and another layer or two including the belt end.
